A number of people caim that there are some certain vehicles and in other cases weapons that are inherently reliable and will continue running until the heat death of the universe. The most infamous case of this is the AK-47 (which is actually the AKM but getting into designations and semanticts would take up the entire article), it has had many people claiming that it can run reliably without any maintanence, and as anyone sensible might expect it's not the case since it would simply break over time. The same applies to the Toyota HiLux which also has many claims that it is reliable enough to run as much as you want provided you have enough fuel. These claims hold no ground, but this doesn't mean that the HiLux isn't a fairly reliable vehicle.
The Toyota HiLux is one of the most well-known vehicles in the world, and especially in Australia where it has been the most popular vehicle since 2012. Since Aussies are known to be avid campers the HiLux's popularity seems to be justified, it can go through most enviroments in a relatively effective manner with its large tyres that are suited for terrains both arid and tropic, however, neglecting to maintain the vehicle will certainly end in a broken down pickup in the middle of nowhere.
There is a reason why you almost always see many boxes and special HiLux spares in the deck of the ute. Equipment and gear such as jumpers, extra spark plugs, some basic tools, spare tyres, snow and ice equipment and a myriad of other things that could make or break the camping trip. Preparedness is one of the most important parts of any trip, if you don't have the right supplies and equipment for even the worst case scenarios then you're actively putting yourself in danger. This is the case if you do not bring some HiLux spares, tyres, components and such, but you should also have at least one form of communication with you and a first aid kit. By bringing along emergency gear then you will be ready and able to get out of an emergency situation such as the car breaking down or crashing.
Aside from emergency equipment to get your HiLux running again if you find yourself in a predicament. What else should you consider about its reliablity? Well, it's not one of the most high-tech cars, it doesn't have many different gadgets which also adds to its reliablity. Usually the more bare-bones the more reliable a vehicle is, however, the HiLux balances this point between comfort and power.
